The journey into the depths of meditation can be both profound and mysterious. As I embarked on the path of Jhana meditation, my primary focus was on attaining deeper levels of concentration. I’ve spent years honing my ability to access the material Jhanas, the first four meditative absorptions that allow the mind to rest in bliss and equanimity. However, as my practice deepened, I found myself increasingly curious about the realms beyond form—the formless Jhanas. These states of meditation, where the very notion of physicality dissolves, present a unique challenge and opportunity for spiritual growth. This is my account of my first steps into Infinite Space, the initial formless Jhana, and how it reshaped my understanding of both meditation and myself.

Before delving into my experience, it’s essential to understand that the Jhanas are divided into two categories: the material Jhanas (the first four) and the formless Jhanas (the next four). The material Jhanas involve refined states of concentration, where the body and mind experience a state of bliss, calm, and focus. The formless Jhanas, on the other hand, transcend the physical realm entirely. In these states, the meditator moves beyond the confines of the body, exploring the very essence of awareness itself. I had previously reached a level of comfort within the material Jhanas, but stepping into the formless states was like stepping into the unknown.

The Transition from Form to Formless

My journey into the formless Jhanas began with a simple realization: I had become too comfortable in the material Jhanas. Though these states were blissful and serene, they no longer felt like a challenge. I had mastered the art of resting in deep concentration, but I sensed that there was something more waiting for me—something beyond the bliss and tranquility I had grown accustomed to. This led me to set my sights on the formless Jhanas, specifically the first of these: Infinite Space.

The first step into Infinite Space requires a shift in focus. Whereas the material Jhanas still involve an awareness of the body and physical sensations, the formless Jhanas demand that the meditator let go of these attachments. This process begins by expanding the awareness of space itself, allowing the mind to experience a sense of boundlessness. As I prepared to make this transition, I felt both excitement and apprehension. How does one let go of form? What would it feel like to enter a space without boundaries? These were questions that swirled in my mind as I embarked on this new phase of my practice.

Entering Infinite Space

The moment I first entered Infinite Space was unlike anything I had ever experienced. In the material Jhanas, there is still a sense of groundedness—a feeling that, despite the deep absorption, you are still tethered to your body in some way. In Infinite Space, that tether is severed. The experience was akin to floating in an endless void, where there was no up or down, no sense of location or direction. The body seemed to dissolve, and all that remained was the awareness of space itself.

At first, this vastness felt disorienting. I was used to focusing on specific objects or sensations during meditation, whether it was the breath, a mantra, or a point of light. In Infinite Space, there was nothing to focus on. There was only space—boundless, limitless, and all-encompassing. It was as if my consciousness had expanded to fill the universe, and yet, paradoxically, there was nothing tangible within that universe to grasp.

This was a state of profound freedom but also a state that required a significant shift in how I approached concentration. Instead of focusing on a particular object or sensation, I had to allow my awareness to simply rest in space. The challenge was to let go of the need to cling to any form, sensation, or thought. In doing so, I experienced a sense of boundless expansion, as if my awareness had no edges, no limits.

The Challenges of Letting Go

Letting go of form is perhaps one of the most challenging aspects of entering the formless Jhanas. In our day-to-day lives, we are constantly bombarded with forms—physical sensations, thoughts, emotions, and perceptions. Our minds are trained to focus on these forms, to identify with them, and to categorize them. In Infinite Space, however, there are no forms to grasp onto. The very nature of this Jhana is formlessness, which means that the meditator must learn to let go of the habitual need to define and categorize experience.

For me, this process of letting go was not easy. There were moments when I found myself clinging to familiar sensations, trying to anchor my awareness in something concrete. At times, my mind would resist the vastness of Infinite Space, pulling me back into the material realm where things felt more familiar and grounded. However, with patience and persistence, I learned to release this need for attachment. Each time I let go, I felt myself sinking deeper into the experience of boundlessness.

It was in this letting go that I began to experience the true nature of Infinite Space. The mind, when freed from the constraints of form, becomes like an empty sky—vast, open, and limitless. This realization brought with it a profound sense of peace. There was no longer any need to search for meaning or understanding in the objects of awareness. Instead, I could simply rest in the spaciousness of consciousness itself.

Insights Gained from Infinite Space

As I continued to practice and deepen my experience of Infinite Space, I began to gain insights that would reshape my understanding of both meditation and reality. One of the most profound realizations was that space itself is not empty—it is filled with potential. In the material world, we often think of space as a void, as something that separates objects from one another. But in the realm of Infinite Space, space is not a separation but a connection. It is the backdrop against which all things arise and dissolve.

This insight had a ripple effect on how I viewed my everyday life. I began to see that much of my suffering came from clinging to forms—whether they were physical objects, relationships, or ideas. By learning to let go of these forms in meditation, I found that I could also let go of them in daily life. This brought a new sense of freedom and lightness to my interactions with the world. Instead of feeling confined by the limitations of form, I could now see the limitless potential that lies beyond form.

Concentration and Infinite Space

Maintaining concentration in the formless Jhanas requires a subtle but powerful shift in technique. In the material Jhanas, concentration is often directed toward a specific object, such as the breath or a visualized image. In Infinite Space, however, there is no object to focus on. Instead, concentration must become diffuse, allowing awareness to rest in the boundless nature of space itself.

This was a challenging adjustment for me at first. My mind was so used to focusing on specific objects that it struggled to maintain concentration in the absence of any object. However, over time, I learned that the key to sustaining concentration in Infinite Space was to relax into the experience rather than force my mind to focus. By allowing my awareness to naturally expand into the vastness of space, I was able to maintain concentration without effort.

In many ways, this practice mirrored the process of letting go that I had experienced earlier. Just as I had to let go of form, I also had to let go of the desire to control or direct my concentration. By releasing this need for control, I found that my mind naturally settled into the expansive awareness of Infinite Space.

Moving Forward: The Next Steps

Having taken my first steps into the realm of Infinite Space, I now find myself looking ahead to the next stages of the formless Jhanas. The journey through the formless realms is one of continued letting go—of sensations, of thoughts, of the very notion of self. As I prepare to explore the next formless Jhana, the realm of Infinite Consciousness, I do so with a sense of excitement and curiosity. Each step on this path brings new insights and deeper levels of awareness, and I am eager to see where it will lead.

For those who are also interested in exploring the formless Jhanas, my advice is to approach the practice with patience and persistence. Letting go of form is not an easy task, and it requires a willingness to confront the habitual patterns of the mind. However, with dedication, the rewards are profound. The experience of Infinite Space is not just a meditative state—it is a glimpse into the boundless nature of consciousness itself.

Conclusion

The journey into the formless Jhanas is one of the most transformative experiences I have encountered on the path of meditation. By letting go of form and embracing the boundless nature of space, I have gained insights that have reshaped my understanding of both meditation and life. The practice of Infinite Space is not just about expanding awareness—it is about realizing the limitless potential that lies within each of us. As I continue to explore the formless realms, I do so with a sense of awe and gratitude for the profound teachings they offer.
